Here's me on the ladder to install the new light fixture that we ordered. It only took three tries; first: I wired it up with out the base plate in place, second: I wired it up with the wires going through the ladder, and thus was unable to put the light in, and third: I got it right.
This is what it looks like on the garage - a nice sunny day that we haven't seen in a while. It puts out alot of light, but has a shade to keep it off the neighbors house.
Here's a detail, you can see I had to make a new mounting place to fit the pole flush on the shingles. There was not electrical box, so I made due with the existing hole, and added caulk and a drip edge to my new plate.
